Soul Reaver XP/Vista Fix

Soul Reaver has problems with modern technology it the point where most people had to resort to running it in software mode to even play it....this meant no in-game movies...among other things...

Now though there is no need for software mode because of this fix....and the videos work perfectly....

This works on XP and Vista....not sure about Windows 7....but no harm in trying....Also I think in Vista most of these things need to be ran as administrator...

1. Install the game as usual from the CD.

2. Download the Official 1.2 Patch:
Mirror 1:
Mirror 2:

3. Install the Official 1.2 patch.

4. Download the Unofficial Patch:
Mirror 1:
Mirror 2 pt1:
Mirror 2 pt2:

5. Open your install folder (usually C:/Program Files/Eidos Interactive/Soul Reaver) copy all the contents of the unofficial patch zip(s) into that folder...if you are asked to replace things click "yes"....

The game CD is no longer needed after following these steps.

Thanks Chriss. I'm not a computer professional but the game made me write that program. Such is its charisma. It feels good that so many people share one common interest: LEGACY OF KAIN game series. :)

hi there.. thnx 4 the detail, i appreciate that.. but i hav some problems here.. i did all the thing that u said here in my XP computer but after the intro video, it just hang and stuck in LOADING there.. pls help me, thnx..

Ashish Yadav said...

If the intro video started, it means the patch is working fine. Try giving it more RAM i.e. closing unnecessary programs running in the system tray and also try running it with the joypad removed. If every thing fails, try uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

"Try giving it more RAM i.e."

how to do it??

have you tried setting the game to Windows 98/ME compatibility? Sometimes that helps.

To set it right-click a shortcut to the game and click Properties.

In Properties click the compatibility tab. Tick the box to run in compatibility mode, and select Windows 98/ME from the drop-down menu. Then click OK.

If that doesn't work, then I have a few questions:

1. Are you running in on a 64-bit system?
2. What operating system are you using?
3. Are you using an nVidia graphics card?

Only asking because it narrows things down.

My version of SR 1 is different? said...

This is great! I've almost got it working properly on my Win7 64bit.

It would seem there must have been more than one version of the game that was released though, unfortunately. After doing all the steps exactly as posted, I get a message when I try to run the game that "music.dat" can't be found.

I have a "bigfile.dat" on my soul reaver cd, but no music.dat. I tried renaming the bigfile.dat to music.dat, and then got a message that there was no voices.dat.

Okay, I have no voices.dat either. So I made a copy of bigfile.dat and renamed it to voices.dat. The game would now at least launch. And yay, the videos played, which I haven't been able to see in years.

But I get no music in game, and the voice is a bunch a garbled noises ranging from high pitched squeaks to enemy attack sounds and other random sound effects.

That was so disjointed it was actually funny to watch, but obviously I wouldn't want to play the game like that. I'm pretty sure that this bigfile.dat which I have has the music.dat and voices.dat combined into one file.

I don't know what I can do about it though. It seems like I would either need a copy of those two files in order to get it working right, or I would need a fixed exe based off of the version of the game which uses bigfile.dat.

I've had a Win7 computer for almost a year without SR working right, and now that I've found this fix I'm so tantalizingly close to having it working properly. I hope you're still looking at this page and that something can be done about this, because I'd hate to be so close and still not be able to get it working right.

Dear 'My version of SR 1 is different?',

I apologize for the inconvenience but I found a bug in the setup program. I'll fix it and upload the corrected setup file asap.

Yagami said...

Well, my version uses the bigfile.dat, as well as those others you listed.

Are you sure you did a full install and not minimum install? Minimum install doesn't install the other files.

Either way I zipped the two files, just unzip them and put them in your install folder:

Does it works on Win 7 64bits ?

I'm downloading the patch, I hope it will...

It appears that's not working on Win7 64bits, the game runs very slowly (I would say about 5 minuts to arrive to me main menu) and it freeze definitly. Must do a hard reboot.

I'm deseperatly searching for a solution to play SR and SR2 on Win7 64bits. If someone have an hint...

I was having exactly the same problems than Ben, but in Windows 7 32 bits. But now it's solved for me! thanks to the patch Ashish Yadav posted in this forum.
Even if you have Win7 x64, try this:
1.-Download the Ashish patch
2.-Uninstall the game
3.-Run the patch, it will you offer to install the game (optionally). Accept and install the game, and the patch.
4.-Remove the "Windows 98" compatibility mode, from the properties of the kain2.exe file. Left the file clean of any compatibility mode.
5.-Done, it should run perfect in you computer after these steps.

Hope it helps :)
(Sorry for my bad english)

That did not work for me. The program could not find the cd because mine is a multi-player cd. it reads/writes dvds as well as cd's.

Ashish Yadav said...

Dear Anonymous,
Please give more details about your Game CD and CD drive. The following information is required:

1. Your Operating System
2. Game? (Soul Reaver 1 or Soul Reaver 2)
3. More info on "multi-player" Soul Reaver Game CD. (Haven't heard of anything as such.)
4. Is your optical (CD/DVD) drive internal or external?
5. The drive letter of your optical drive.

The patch setup program has been written specifically for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (Part 1). Meanwhile, I'll also go through if anything is required to be done from my end.

Ashish Yadav said...

Dear oldz,
The setup has been specifically revised to include win 7 and has been reuploaded. However, it is known that the game still does not work properly in win 7 on some machines. In that case, playing the game on winXP is the only option. The link for the setup:

Dear oldz,
The link is working; I've myself tried it. However, it's good that you were not able to download (no pun intended) as I was working on the newer, more streamlined version of the patch setup. The good news is that you can now download the new version at
Hope that you are able to play Soul Reaver with this patch.
